ABOUT US

Chur started from very humble beginnings in our home based workshop in Auckland, New Zealand in December 2019. We have always been a tiny team of two - with Katie running the business full time, and her fiance Daniel helping out with design and other areas when he can. The idea behind Chur was to combine our love for colour, print and clothing with our endless source of inspiration - the flora, fauna, and culture of New Zealand.

Katie has been making clothes for over a decade, working in the wearable tech and costume industries. After a while, she decided it was time to return to what made her passionate about sewing in the first place and launched her own brand. There were hurdles, of course. 4 months after our launch, Covid-19 threw an enormous spanner in the works. We left Auckland and the ever present threat of local lockdowns for a more slow paced life in Whangarei. Then, once we had seemingly gotten back on our feet, we had somewhat of a more personal and tiny spanner in the works. A baby was on the way! We had to put the business on the backburner while we learned how to navigate our new roles as parents. Now, we are here for our “third time’s a charm” relaunch of our business!

Chur is a “slow fashion” brand. We design all of our clothing patterns and fabric prints; then manufacture every Chur garment in our home based workshop in Whangarei, New Zealand. Our designs come from what inspires us, not from what is trending on any given week.

Any fabric wastage that we produce is kept aside for an exciting (currently top secret) future project, meaning none of it goes to landfill. Other waste we produce, such as paper waste from our pattern design process, is recycled wherever possible. We believe in preserving the natural beauty of New Zealand, and aim to do all that we can to ensure that our operations have as little impact on the environment as possible.
